LOS ANGELES, California, March 27, 2025 – Bandai Namco officially raised the curtain at Shadow Labyrinthe, an impressive image of the iconic Pac@-@ The Man universe that will be released on July 18 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X vidasS, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. With a price of $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99, this 2D action platform combines nostalgic landmarks with a funny story and a limited space that is different from anything fans can expect. A Digital Deluxe edition will also be available at €39.99 / €34.99 / €39.99, combining the basic game with a digital art book and soundtrack. According to Bandai Namco, the first adopters of one of the editions will unlock the downloadable content “Original Arcade SFX”, transforming the sounds of the game MINI-PUCK into the classic audio of the original arcade machine of the 1980s.
What is Shadow Laberrinth? In her heart, Shadow Labyrinth is a 2D action game that uses the DNA of Pac@-@ Man to create a dark world full of mazes. Players enter the boots of Ewordsman No. 8, a silent protagonist called an alien world by PUCK, a sensitive yellow orb that brings an insensitive appearance to Pac@-@ Man. PUCK wakes you up to navigate on an unforgivable planet filled with postwar relics, horrific mutated creatures and maze-like environments that reflect the original structure of the arcade game – but on a massive and immersive scale. According to Steam’s game description, players will have to discover secrets, consume enemies, and evolve hunter hunting to survive.
Black maze: a twist genre at Pac@-@ Man
On the surface, the notion of turning Pac@-@ Man in a burdeos action-adventure seems absurd, even blasphemous to purists. But Bandai Namco does not just load in the nostalgia of the brand. In fact, the development team inherently woven Shadow Labyrinth into the philosophical and aesthetic spirit of Pac@-@Homme. According to the details of Nintendo’s direct current, the maze, traditionally central to Pac@-@ Man, today is the geographic backbone of an entire alien planet. When it expands, the game card even looks like a huge maze, demanding players understand and dominate its design to advance, just like the original arcade title.
But it is not only the map that is a maze. The game encourages players to choose their own path through the levels, exploring in the direction that arouses curiosity. The structure is flexible, but challenging - a tribute to the seemingly simple entries of the joystick Arcade Pac-Man that has gradually climbed into difficulty. The game retains this growing tension, now masked by the fighting, exploration and progression of the characters.
Three game modes: MINI-PUCK, Swordsman No.8 and GAIA
The Gameplay variety is the key to Shadow Laberrinth. The game has three different ways to reach the legacy of Pac@-@ Man. First, there is the traditional fight with Swordsman No.8, where players manipulate weapons, avoid enemies and master skills. Then there is the MINI-PUCK mode, which allows the exploration of hidden secret routes, echoing the original bonus game tunnels and distortion zones.
The real game changer, however, is GAIA: a machined hemoth that serves as a game version of a Power Pellet. When players activate GAIA, they temporarily trigger devastating force, destroying enemies and barriers. GAIA can even eat enemies, a clear wink at Super Pac@-@ But its power is a limited and demanding deployment. This trifet of game styles adds layers of strategy while ensuring that the experience remains fresh and dynamic.
Eat or eat: The Abex predator loop
“Shadow Laberrinth” is strongly based on the concept of consumption, a central mechanic of Pac@-@ It turned into something primal and surviving. According to Bandai Namco’s revealing trailer, players are not only encouraged to defeat enemies – they are urged to devour them. By consuming different enemies, players collect resources that feed updates, unlock new skills and improve the feat of fighting. It is a grotesque evolution of the “food” mechanic which is a Pac@-@ Man, but now stiff in a more visceral context.
This loop – which tends to evolve – transforms the spatiologist No. 8 of a vulnerable newcomer in the apex predator of this alien world. It’s a metaphorical metamorphosis as much as a game. Where Pac-Man hit points in the darkness, size 8 a path through nightmare creatures, rising with each bite taken.
The G-Hosts: Ghosts to nightmares
A persistent question among fans was: Where are the ghosts? As the game shows, they have evolved – or perhaps deviated – into something much more sinister. In Shadow Labyrinth, G-Hosts are parasitic entities that infest machines and organisms, providing them in monstrous hybrids. Each G-Host represents a twisted version of the original Pac@-@ Man, like Pinky, revisited as huge and grotesque battles with unique mechanics and backstoories.
These antagonists do not float until they are eaten. They actively form the danger of the world, tormenting environments, changing the design of levels and increasing tension. They embody the original spirit of ghosts, but are reinterpreted through a terrorist science fiction lens. To fight them, we need strategy, skills and sometimes raw energy from GAIA.
A place in the multiverse Bandai Namco
Fans with sharp eyes and a deeper knowledge of Bandai Namco’s legacy can notice subtle scripts to their other franchises. As sources such as Anime News Network and Rock Paper Shotgun claim, Shadow Labyrinth is connected to the United Galaxy Space Force (UGSF) timeline, a shared universe that includes games such as Dig Dog, Bosconian and Galaga. This deeper integration provides an additional layer of fan service, suggesting that Shadow Labyrinth is not only a Spin-off Pac@-@ But a puzzle piece in Bandai Namco’s greatest science fiction story.
Enemy drawings, background details and subtle features refer to this larger mythology, rewarding players who pay attention. This intertextual approach reinforces immersion and creates a richer world that not only honours Pac@-@ But a whole series of classic games have resurfaced through a darker lens.
The legacy meets the reinvention: from the arcade cabinet to the epic console
At first glance, it is difficult to reconcile the happy and crazy animal of the 1980s with the story of the Maze of Shadow. However, the game does not aim to erase the charm of Pac@-@ Man, amplifies it by refracting it through a modern and mature objective. As we saw at the Nintendo Direct, the developers focused on preserving the essence of Pac-Man – simple inputs, an adjusted level design, a changing challenge – while expanding their context and emotional reach.
This is not the first time that Pac@-@ The man ventured beyond the gallery. TV adaptations like Pac- World in 2013 to last year’s surreal animated short film in Amazon’s Secret Level series – which inspired Shadow Laberrinth in the first place – the character proved versatile. But this is certainly the most daring catch: a funny meroidvania where to be Pac@-@ Man means being a soldier of destiny, not just a hungry circle. And strangely, it works.
Is the Dark Maze worth it? The buzz is real, and also skepticism. As with Gematsu and PlayStation Blog, many players are intrigued by edgy aesthetics, others with tonal pivot. The truth is probably in the middle. With a clear mechanics, a strong visual identity and a robust update system, Shadow Labyrinth has the creation of a classic cult, assuming it offers the tension and depth it promises.
It remains to be seen whether he joins the pantheon of the great methoidvanies next to Hollow Knight or Dead Cells. But if nothing else, it proves that inherited franchises must not remain in the past – they can evolve, mutate and bite.
When and where can I play? Shadow Labyrinth released on 18 July 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X vidasS, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Previous orders are open for Standard and Deluxe editions, with first buyers receiving retro-tempered exclusive sound effects.
