MARCH 07, 2025 – Niantic officially announced a new Wayfarer Challenge, inviting Pokémon GO players in Chile and India to participate in the global game configuration while winning rewards. This event allows instructors to evaluate and approve real world locations to become PokéStops and Gyms, greatly improving their local Pokémon GO experience.
What is Niantic Wayfarer?
Niantic Wayfarer is a platform that allows Pokémon GO players, called niantic Scouts, to name and review the real world places to include in the game. These accredited venues, called Wayspots, serve as PokéStops and Gyms, enriching the interactive gaming environment.
By accessing the Wayfarer system, instructors can offer unique monuments such as frescoes, statues or historic sites. Once submitted, these proposals are subject to a community-based assessment process, ensuring that only outstanding and safe sites are approved. According to Niantic, Wayfarer promotes community engagement and improves the exploration of the real world of Pokémon GO.
Challenge for Travellers Event Details
The last Wayfarer challenge is divided into two phases:
- Chile: Runs from Friday, March 7, to Sunday, March 9, 2025
- India: Runs from Monday, March 10, to Wednesday, March 12, 2025
During these periods, players from different countries can access the Wayfarer platform to review and approve Wayspot proposals. To participate, trainers must have at least level 37 in Pokémon GO and have a registered Wayfarer account.
How does the Wayfarer Challenge work?
Participation in the Wayfarer Challenge involves the following steps:
- Log in to the Niantic Wayfarer platform.
- Review Wayspot nominations submitted by other trainers.
- Vote on whether the proposed locations meet Niantic’s criteria for PokéStops and Gyms.
- Ensure at least 50 nominations are reviewed to qualify for rewards.
In addition, players can present new PokéStop nominations through the Pokémon GO PokéStop Contributions function, expanding the game card.
Wayfarer Challenge Awards
Niantic introduced rewards based on milestones for this challenge. The more Wayspot proposals are reviewed and approved, the more the award will be:
- 5,000 approvals: 20 Ultra Balls, a Star Piece, an Incense, and a Poffin.
- 10,000 approvals: 25 Ultra Balls, two Star Pieces, two Incense, two Poffins, and a Lucky Egg.
To receive these awards, trainers must actively participate and adhere to the examination thresholds. These awards will be distributed to all qualified participants once the event is completed.
PokéStop Challenge Event
With the Wayfarer Challenge, Niantic also introduced a PokéStop Challenge that runs from March 9-12. During this period, new Poké Stops coaches can benefit from:
- 3x XP for first-time visits to new PokéStops.
- 3x Stardust from opening Gifts.
- Increased Kecleon spawns.
- Special Field Research tasks featuring Eevee encounters.
- Exclusive Timed Research opportunities with additional Pokémon rewards.
By collaborating with these new PokéStops, players can enjoy the event while collecting rare objects in the game and Pokémon.
Why is Wayfarer important?
The Wayfarer Challenge represents Niantic’s ongoing effort to encourage community participation in the formation of the world Pokémon GO. By allowing coaches to identify and evaluate real world locations, the game continues to evolve to reflect the local cultures and environment of players.
Since its launch, Pokémon GO has revolutionized the game of augmented reality by mixing digital and physical worlds. However, the game has also faced challenges, such as pedestrian safety concerns and site-based disturbances. The Wayfarer initiative ensures that the new PokéStops and Gyms are placed in meaningful, safe and interesting places.
