LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22, 2024 — Google TV is rounding out 2024 with a festive boost to its Freeplay offering by adding more channels just in time for the holiday season. According to 9to5Google, this comes as part of a significant expansion effort that began earlier this year, bringing the total number of free, ad-supported live streaming channels to 171. While the rollout enhances the user experience in the U.S., other regions remain excluded from accessing these channels.
Steady Growth Throughout 2024
Google TV first launched its Freeplay feature with approximately 80 channels, offering immediate access to free live streaming content without additional app downloads. Over the course of the year, the platform aggressively expanded its library, adding around 50 new channels by November. The latest additions bring the total count to nearly 160 as of late December, reflecting a commitment to making Freeplay a competitive option in the growing free streaming market.
New Channels Just in Time for the Holidays
The latest lineup includes over a dozen new channels, several of which are holiday-themed. According to 9to5Google, the new offerings include dedicated Christmas channels like “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” “Xumo Free Holiday Movie Channel,” and “Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits.” Other channels cater to a variety of interests, such as “UFC Unbeaten” for sports enthusiasts and “The Design Network” for home improvement fans. Some highlights of the holiday-specific additions include:
- Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits
- Stingray Soul Storm Christmas
- Stingray Hot Country Christmas
These seasonal channels may only be available temporarily, but they underscore Google TV’s strategy to tap into festive viewership trends.
Challenges and Setbacks
Despite the growing catalog, Google TV has faced challenges with its Freeplay app. A revamped version of the app introduced earlier this year was rolled back due to stability issues. Reports of app crashes, particularly in early November, prompted Google to remove the update from most devices, leaving only the Google TV Streamer unaffected. This setback has left some users waiting for the promised streamlined experience that Freeplay is intended to deliver.
Partnerships Expand the Offering
Beyond its proprietary Freeplay channels, Google TV offers access to over 1,100 additional free channels through partnerships with platforms like Plex, PlutoTV, and Xumo. However, accessing these channels requires users to download additional apps. While this approach adds versatility, the seamlessness of the Freeplay offering remains a key selling point for Google TV devices, especially for users seeking an out-of-the-box streaming experience.
Content Adjustments: Additions and Removals
In addition to the new channels, Google TV made some adjustments to its catalog. While new content like “Designated Survivor” and “Z Nation” was added, one channel, “Motortrend Fast TV,” was removed from the car-focused lineup. This marks a rare reduction amidst a broader trend of consistent expansion.
As the holiday season progresses, Google TV’s updated lineup positions it as a strong contender in the free streaming market, offering something for everyone. Whether for festive programming or year-round favorites, Freeplay continues to evolve, enhancing accessibility and entertainment options for its growing user base in the United States.
