Blackmagic Design officially announced the launch time line and prices of its innovative Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive two lens camera system. According to PetaPixel, the camera, specifically designed to capture Apple’s immersive video content for Apple Vision Pro, will be available for pre-order at $29,995. The first units are expected to send their clients early in the first quarter of 2025.
The Black Ursa Cinema Immersion marks an important step as the first commercial camera built for Apple’s immersive video format. This format is suitable for Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s high anticipation helmet of mixed reality. The new Blackmagic system not only offers state-of-the-art image features, but is also perfectly integrated into the production stream with updated software tools to support immersive video creation.
Advanced two-level system and high-resolution sensors
Ursa immersive cinema has a fixed and customized double-lens system that is installed in the factory in the camera body. Blackmagic Design points out that this lens system has been specially developed to work with large format image sensors within the camera, ensuring optimal performance. According to Blackmagic, the lenses are pre-calibrated with precise position data that are stored inside the camera during manufacture. This data is integrated into Blackmagic RAW files and helps in post-production workflows.
Behind each lens is a powerful sensor that offers a resolution of 8,160 x 7,200 pixels per eye, or more than 8K per eye. According to Blackmagic, sensors work with pixel level synchronization, providing exceptional clarity and image consistency. The system supports 3D video recording at 90 frames per second, combining the two video signals in a single file to simplify post-production. The camera also has 16 dynamic stops, ensuring a wide range of outstanding details and shadows for high quality visuals.
DaVinci Resolver Studio to support Apple’s immersive video
To complete the Ursa Cine Immersive, Blackmagic will release an updated version of DaVinci Resolve Studio in early 2025. The update will add robust support to edit Apple Immersive Video, creating an end-to-end workflow for immersive content creators. This includes visualization tools, degree of color and export of images adapted for Apple Vision Pro. A new immersive video viewer will allow publishers to open, tilt and roll clips on 2D monitors. For a completely immersive publishing experience, publishers can use Apple Vision Pro itself.
In addition, Blackmagic Design points out that the update of DaVinci Resolve Studio will allow publishers to pass the transitions done on Apple Vision Pro using FCP XML metadata. This feature will give publishers access to clean master files for final production. Export presets will further simplify workflows by allowing fast production in a format that can be seen directly on Apple Vision Pro, saving a lot of time after production.
Improvements in storage, color science and workflow
The new Blackmagic Design camera is equipped with its fifth generation of color science, which includes a new film curve to improve image quality. The Ursa Cine Immersive is equipped with an 8TB multimedia module to store large quantities of high resolution images, adapting the substantial data requirements of immersive 3D video capture. The inclusion of DaVinci Resolve Studio with the camera ensures that users have all the tools they need for post-production directly outside the box.
According to Blackmagic Design, combining data from calibrated lenses, synchronized sensors and their advanced color science creates an ideal production ecosystem for Apple Immersive Video. This makes the Ursa Cine Immersive particularly suitable for capturing high-end actions, concerts, sporting events and other immersive content that can be enjoyed at Apple Vision Pro.
