REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 15, 2024 — The gaming world is abuzz as Microsoft’s highly anticipated title, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” gears up for release on Dec. 9, marking the biggest AAA game launch of the year. Developed by Bethesda’s MachineGames in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, this first-person adventure promises to be a standout in a year lacking new console hardware to drive holiday gaming sales. According to Variety, the project has been in development for over five years and carries the potential to redefine Xbox’s position in the market.
The game, a creation of Todd Howard, executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, has its roots in Howard’s lifelong admiration for the Indiana Jones franchise. As stated by Howard, “I’ve been an Indiana Jones fan my entire life. When I saw the movie, I believed it was all real… I always thought about what kind of game I’d like to play in Indiana Jones.” His inspiration came from a real-world phenomenon, The Great Circle, a collection of sites around the globe that form a perfect circle on a map. The game’s narrative unfolds as players explore the mystery of these interconnected sites, setting the stage for a thrilling adventure steeped in the iconic Indy style.
Indiana Jones Comes to Gaming
“Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is a first-person adventure game set between the events of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “The Last Crusade” (1989). The story combines stealth missions, intricate puzzles, and cinematic storytelling with over three hours of high-quality cutscenes. As per MachineGames’ executive producer Jerk Gustafsson, the game’s pacing reflects the character’s obsession with uncovering history and exploring the past, a thematic continuity with the films. Gustafsson noted, “The game takes place between ‘Raiders’ and ‘The Last Crusade,’ and we specifically looked at ‘Raiders’ because the character differs a little bit between the movies. What defines him in the game is his obsession with his work.”
Adding authenticity to the game, Troy Baker, known for his role as Joel in “The Last of Us,” lends his voice to Indiana Jones. According to Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, Baker’s portrayal ensures that the character feels true to the cinematic version, even without Harrison Ford’s involvement. “Between the work MachineGames did in representing him physically and the stunning work Troy has done voicing the character, you forget it’s not Harrison when you play it. He’s that good,” Reilly said.
Xbox’s Holiday Strategy
With no new console generation launching this year, Microsoft is banking on blockbuster titles to dominate the holiday season. “The Great Circle” follows the success of “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” released on Oct. 25, which broke franchise records in total players, hours played, and matches. According to a report by MoffettNathanson analyst Clay Griffin, Microsoft’s content portfolio now surpasses Sony’s, giving Xbox a competitive edge. The game will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at no additional cost, a move reminiscent of Netflix’s subscription model aimed at boosting player engagement.
Matt Booty, Microsoft’s president of game content and studios, emphasized the title’s appeal as a holiday release, contrasting it with the fast-paced action of “Black Ops.” He explained, “Compared with the rapid-fire, multiplayer action of ‘Black Ops,’ the Indy title is a more thoughtful adventure game — well-suited to the holiday break, when people have more time on their hands.”
The Making of an Authentic Adventure
The development of “The Great Circle” has been a journey in itself. Originally pitched by Howard to LucasArts in 2009, the project was shelved due to publishing complications. A decade later, it was revived with the support of John Drake, then part of Disney’s gaming division, and Lucasfilm Games. The game’s world-building draws heavily from the pulpy adventure genre of the 1930s, with nods to the Indiana Jones cinematic universe and even Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Adventure ride.
As per MachineGames’ vision, the game’s opening sequence is an ambitious set piece designed to captivate fans of the franchise. While details remain under wraps, Howard hinted at its significance, stating, “If you’re an ‘Indiana Jones’ fan, it’s the opening you’ve wanted.” The development team has also paid meticulous attention to the game’s visual and narrative elements, ensuring that the experience feels authentic and immersive.
A Glimpse Into the Future
The success of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” could pave the way for a broader gaming franchise. While Microsoft and Lucasfilm Games are currently focused on the game’s launch and planned downloadable content (DLC) in 2025, there is potential for future stories within the Indiana Jones universe. According to Reilly, “There’s a lot of space in between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories.”
The game’s exclusivity to Xbox and PC until its PlayStation release in spring 2025 reflects Microsoft’s evolving strategy. Instead of waging traditional console wars, the company is leveraging marquee content, cloud gaming, and subscription services like Game Pass to capture market share. Griffin highlighted this shift, stating, “Xbox’s strategy of moving up in the gaming value chain as with marquee content like the new Indy game is better than trying to out-console Nintendo or Sony.”
“Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” has the potential to become a holiday gaming sensation, drawing fans of the franchise and adventure games alike. Whether it becomes canon within the Indiana Jones cinematic universe or remains a standalone story, it marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Microsoft, Bethesda, and Lucasfilm Games. As Reilly aptly noted, “It is meant to be an authentic Indiana Jones experience, in that sense.”
