CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Dec. 8, 2024 — SpaceX successfully launched 23 Starlink satellites early Sunday morning, marking another milestone in its efforts to expand global broadband internet coverage. Liftoff occurred at 12:12 a.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, using a Falcon 9 rocket equipped with satellites designed for advanced connectivity, including direct-to-cell capabilities.
The Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage, on its second flight, returned to Earth shortly after launch, landing smoothly on the droneship ‘A Shortfall of Gravitas’ stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. This successful recovery highlights SpaceX’s ongoing commitment to reusability, a cornerstone of its cost-efficient spaceflight model. The upper stage deployed the 23 satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO) as planned, enhancing the Starlink constellation.
Among the satellites implemented, 13 are equipped with direct cell technology, part of the Spacex initiative to provide internet services directly to mobile devices without the need for traditional land infrastructure. Currently, the Starlink Network includes more than 6,800 operational satellites, of which approximately 350 admit direct functionalities to the cells. This progress positions Spacex as leader in mobile satellite communications.
The launch of Sunday was the 123A Mission Falcon 9 of the year, with almost 70% dedicated to the expansion of the Starlink Megaconstellation. The mission underlines the aggressive launch rate of Spacex as it continues to build the largest satellite network in history. The company’s efforts open the way to broader accessibility on the Internet, especially in remote and poorly served regions.
The Starlink project has also drawn attention to its impact on astronomy and space traffic. Efforts are being made to respond to concerns, including the implementation of anti -reflective coatings to reduce satellite brightness. Spacex aims to find a balance between the progress of connectivity and the minimization of environmental impact and the observation of its operations.
